WITH ITS TRIBU A great bike outing

Want to pedal with family and friends?

The expedition starts at home! Check your bikes, fill your water bottle and backpack, pack your patches just in case, read the route description and let’s go!

The adventure starts from the Val’Escaut marina, helmet on: off we go!

Once you’ve reached the Cité des Congrès, follow the Escaut to the railroad bridge: a blue “Boucle Un’Escaut” sign awaits you: this will be your “blue” thread throughout the ride.

First climb over the bridge to change banks!

A few good pedal strokes later, helmets screwed on and hair blowing in the wind, your mini peloton arrives in Bruay-sur-Escaut. Here again, a little tip for taking the right track! At the top of the bridge, don’t be surprised – take the path on your right!

Blue signposts all along the way invite you to discover some lovely detours through the mining towns, the Etang de la Gare d’Eau in Bruay, and the Parc Joliot Curie in Fresnes-sur-Escaut. But be sure to remember the route you’ve taken, so you can get back on the loop more easily!

When you reach the Fresnes-sur-Escaut lock, stop to admire the view over the canal – a barge may be passing by! Take the opportunity to hydrate and look at the map! You’re not far from the Chabaud Latour leisure park!

Get back in the saddle, but be careful! After the bridge, you’ll enter an urban area, in single file, so be careful when crossing the streetcar tracks! This is the only place where vigilance is required.

A Chabaud Latour Time for a break

It’s time for the refito!

A well-deserved break awaits you on the Chabaud Latour site!

First of all, take time to admire the view: in the background, the headframe and the slag heap, highlighted by the stretch of water known as the mining slump pond.

The ideal spot for a picnic or a snack at the Guinguette du Lac! Take time to recharge your batteries, you’re halfway along the route. Younger visitors will appreciate the children’s playground nearby.

Hang up your bike: a walk is in order!

After heading back towards the headframe and skirting the pond, a paved road is waiting to shake your calves!

Back to calm, you’ll find yourself in front of the former miners’ café turned hiking café: La Roselière. I suggest you leave your bikes here and set off on foot in the direction of the iron giant that has been taunting you ever since you arrived!

The Ledoux headframe, listed as a Historic Monument, has been preserved as a witness to the past of the former mining site, which remained in operation until 1989.

Not far from it is the Ledoux slag heap. The panoramic view is well worth the climb. Grab your courage and start climbing – you’ll thank me for encouraging you!

The last few kilometers along the gueules noires greenway

Recovering from the thrill of this breathtaking view, hop on your bikes for the second part of the adventure!

The famous Vauban winks at you before you set off, with its cofferdams built on the Jard, and its ramparts.

With the Chabaud Latour site behind you, a bit of the urban zone awaits you, before joining the voie verte des gueules noires.

On the way back, you’ll pass the former Houillères de Fresnes-sur-Escaut railway station. And yes, the greenway on which you’re riding was once a railroad line used to transport coal from one town to another.

Peacefully, you’ll approach your starting point via the Bleuse Borne slag heaps at Anzin.

With the Cité des Congrès in your sights, you’ve arrived at your destination with a smile on your face and a head full of memories.
