Our RAMSAR site

Do you know what the Scarpe and Escaut Valleys, the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel and the Guérande Salt Marshes have in common? These three sites are among the wetlands protected by the Ramsar Convention.

The Ramsar label (named after the Iranian city where the Convention on Wetlands was signed) is an international recognition of the richness of a wetland and the actions taken to preserve it. These wetlands are an integral part of our national heritage and contribute to France’s appeal as a tourist destination. Even in lesser-known sites, wetlands are ideal for walks, educational visits and leisure activities.

Scarpe and Escaut valleys

The Scarpe and Escaut Valleys Ramsar site is the largest inland wetland in the Hauts-de-France region: 27622 hectares between Valenciennes and Douai. The perimeter includes 11 communes in the Valenciennes Métropole tourist area… Not bad, eh? Discover an incredible mosaic of water bodies, canals, meadows, reed beds, peat bogs, alluvial forests and swamps.
