Millieux Humide celebrates World Wetlands Day

Every year in France, throughout the month of February, field actions are organized to raise awareness of wetland preservation.

A month in the heart of winter to learn more about wetlands, those transitional spaces between land and water. These precious places where shallow water (fresh or salt) is present on a permanent or temporary basis, accompanied by vegetation adapted to this type of soil or submersion.

February in the great outdoors Wetlands Month

Why are wetlands celebrated on February 2? To celebrate the signing of the Convention on Wetlands, signed in Ramsar (Iran) on February 2, 1971. This was the first (and only) international treaty concerning a particular type of natural environment.

Every year, the Scarpe-Escaut Regional Nature Park offers a program of events for the general public on local wetlands.

Walks, site visits, participatory workcamps, exhibitions, games… This year’s theme is “Protecting wetlands for our common future”, and associations, communes, intercommunalités, etc. are mobilizing to offer you 22 events throughout the region, between February 1 and March 1.
