The chameleon house of Philippe Collet If you are looking for a place to sleep and dine in Valenciennes with lots of charm and character, look no further, Le Grand Duc is the ideal place to stay. Built in a beautifully restored mansion, the house of a former director of the mining company, it has 5 rooms with poetic names. It is a baroque-and-roll style guest house. The whole place and each of the five rooms are tastefully decorated because the owner Philippe Collet is also a professional interior decorator and a sculptor. Celebrities (David Bowie and Fanny Ardant to name a few) stayed there, and the singer Babet even created a song "the room forever". The Grand Duke is very inspiring because art is present everywhere. The superb decoration is updated regularly by the talented owner. Next to the kitchen, there is a giant chandelier in perpetual change, which follows the mood and the season of its owner. Luxury designer furniture shares space with vintage and fun items from flea markets. The result is captivating and gives its visitors a feeling of being in another world, like in a fairy tale. The whole place can be reserved for private events, and they regularly organize cooking lessons, concerts or other festivities. The Grand Duke has a spacious and beautiful garden, with some interesting works of art scattered all over the place. Our favorite is the red door at the bottom of the garden. The door from nowhere and elsewhere, symbol of a new beginning. The cuisine is exceptional. Alexis Vache, the chef of the house makes surprisingly refined French cuisine for the happy guests. The dishes are as beautiful as they are delicious. Lover of art and gastronomy, Le Grand Duc is a place you will love. IRMA (REFASHION GALLERY) The spirit of the place! The Grand Duke, for sure, is a guest house with soul. It is also a house that proudly claims its industrial origin. The Grand Duke had its hour of glory during the captains of the mining epic of the 20th century. The house is reborn today after a complete renovation. It offers a surprising decor, combining respect for heritage with the high standards of equipment expected by the traveler of our time. It used to be the house built for the Director of the Central Workshops of the Anzin Mining Company. Look right in front! Impossible not to see the large porch of this old factory, treated in a monumental way and dated 1842. The director thus had a privileged position to observe the entrances and exits of the 4000 workers and miners assigned to the various workshops of the place, also known as the name of "Chantier des Mines".
