The fortified town of Condé-sur-l’Escaut (XII- XIX.)
Whether as an assailant or a simple visitor it's always a surprise to discover this town famous for its double defensive system which is a major feature of the regional "fortified towns route". The military engineers worked constantly to improve the defence of this small town along the Escaut (Scheldt) from artillery, taking full account of the site’s inherent constraints and terrain: a small limestone spur surrounded by marshland and...The fortified town of Condé-sur-l’Escaut (XII- XIX.)

The military engineers worked constantly to improve the defence of this small town along the Escaut (Scheldt) from artillery, taking full account of the site’s inherent constraints and terrain: a small limestone spur surrounded by marshland and rivers. Visitors to the town can admire a series of mediaeval fortifications (from the 12th century) and more heavily fortified structures (from the 17th century), in addition to the picturesque old streets which are home to a number of listed monuments such as the Arsenal (12th century), the Hôtel de Bailleul, the Vautourneux Gate (18th century) and many other surprises!
